How to Verify Insurance Coverage

To make sure you know what to expect for coverage of nutrition counseling and any potential out of pocket costs, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

  • Does my plan cover the following outpatient Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes?

    • 97802 (initial session)

  • Is nutrition counseling covered for my diagnosis (eating disorder, gastrointestinal condition, etc.)?

  • How many visits do I have annually?

  • Do I have a copayment or a deductible? What is it?

  • Are there any other limitations or information I should know on my policy to see a registered dietitian?
